This novel can provide a stable leg from which literary and historical analysis can be made particularly with reference to the different levels and spheres of challenges found amongst the Spanish population at the height and extent of the Spanish Civil War. Parties involved in the negotiation PepsiCo is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Purchase, New York, with interests in manufacturing and marketing a wide variety of carbonated and non-carbonated beverages, as well as salty, sweet and cereal-based snacks, and other foods. Besides the Pepsi brands, the company owns the brands Quaker Oats, Gatorade, Frito-Lay, SoBe, Naked, Tropicana, Copella, Mountain Dew, Mirinda and 7 Up (outside the USA). In 1966, when Romania was living under the communist manifesto, in US, the newly-born cola brand began full-scale commercial distribution of Pepsi. History of the conflict PepsiCo has located some facilities and headquarters in a business park from Romania, which is not very well communicated with the local transportation network. Though, the employees find it hard to commute and to arrive to their work place. A previous analysis of the national culture, showed that in Romania, it is very common that the companies which are located outside the living area, would offer their employees a free and private line transportation from their homes to their work places. Due to the influence of the national culture on the organizational culture, so on the projects one, PepsiCo considered that the implementation of a private transportation line may be a good strategy in the attempt to increase their employees motivation. A project management team was nominated for the completion of a strategy regarding the implementation of a private transportation line for PepsiCos employees. The name of the project is Go4ward and it is sponsored by the CEO of PepsiCo. An important characteristic of this project is that it is a pilot project which will be implemented just in a single department which will be the production one. The period within it will be developed is 6 months. During this interval of time the employees will have to complete a Before and After questionnaire which will evaluate if they appreciate and use the new transportation line. This pilot project tries to increase the employees motivation and improve the work environment, though, after the analysis of the questionnaires results, the project team will be able to inform the top management if the new transportation line was an important factor in increasing this items. In case of a favorable result considering the employees motivation which will prove that this pilot project was efficient, the top management will decide whether to permanently implement this transportation line within all companys departments. Our main goal is to develop and execute a pilot project which aims at organising and implementing a private transportation network for PepsiCos production department employees in order to try to increase their motivation and to improve the work environment. Go4ward pilot projects objectives are: to respect the budget given by the sponsor: 95,000 Euro; to plan, execute, monitorcontrol and close within 6 months; 80% of the targeted employees use the new transportation line. Once the implementation plan was drawn, the project management team needed a final approval from the CEO in terms of allocated budget and other delivarables. For this purpose, a meeting was schedueled having as participants: PepsiCos CEO Project management team representatives III. Stages of the negotiation process 1. Preparation The main topic which requires attention is the final budget of the project. Initially, after presenting the project charter to the CEO, the allocated budget was 95,000 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬ but due to the economic crisis the market is facing, he decided to decrease it. In order to describe the negotiation process better it is necessary to answer to the following questions: WHO speaks for each party, is authorized to make/reject offers, and how many people will be on each team? WHERE will negotiation take place, and what will be the seating arrangement? WHEN will negotiations begin, and how long will sessions last? HOW will offers be made, issues included in the discussion? WHAT form of final agreement is acceptable (handshake, verbal, written, notarized)? The project management team will be represented by two members, namely the team leader and the HR Manager. The CEO himself will represent the other party of the negotiation process. According to their positions within the company, both parties are entitled to make decisions with respect to the ongoing topic. The negotiation will take place at the Romanian PepsiCo headquarter and is intended to be concluded at the end of the session. The main aspects included in the discussion will be the key issues presented above, all of them regarding the budget allocation. The offers will be made considering the work break-down structure, risk analysis and qualtity plan. The final agreement will be written and signed by both parties for the further implementation. The CEO established his BATNA at the level of 80,000 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬ and made it clear that no budget extension would be possible. The project management team representatives offer was of 85,000 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬, decreased with 10,000 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬ comparing with the initial approved budget. As a result there were several compatible goals that the project management team and the CEO had and did not need any bargaining. The main compatible goal was represented by the importance of the marketing campaign and internal communication for the success of the project. Since the CEO had a special interest in meeting his employees expectations and raising their motivation, he immediately agreed with the budget we proposed for WP2, namely 300 à ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬. Also, the legal issues were seen as a compatible goal since the company is known for its compliance with the current regional lesiglation. Also, the budget allocated for the project management team was not questionable, considering that the CEO was satisfied with the work delivered up to that moment. However there were several issues that had to be traded upon in order for the project management team to obtain the desired budget. The main discussed aspect was the transportation budget which happened to be the largest within all work packages. The CEO considered that the company did not need new vehicles, taking into consideration that the project was just a pilot one and nobody could insure the increase in the employees motivation, one of the primary goals of Go4ward Project. Still, the project management team tried to convince the CEO that new vehicles would be more efficient for the company in terms of depreciation in the event the project would turn into a great success. However, the CEO intervened again, highlighting the fact that employees would be grateful for the new facility but they will not be necessarily interested in the vehicle brand, as long as the buses are safe, reliable and with updated and checked technical requirements. Conclusions Considering all the aspects of the negotiation process, it can be concluded that the negotiation proved to be a real success due to the fact that the main goal of the two parties was the approval of a appropriate budget that would allow the further implementation of the project. The negotiation resulted in a win-win situation, as the CEOs imposed budget was observed while the project management team accomplished to obtain a larger amount of money then their minimum expectations. Both parties were willing to reach an agreement as easy as possible, but according to the budget limit imposed by the General Manager. They both proved to have a mixture between collaborating and compromising conflict styles within the negotiation process there were several compatible desires, which significantly helped the parties to reach an agreement meeting the deadline; however, there were also severasl aspects that required bargaining in order to reach the best alternative. To conclude, the negotiation process was a success overall. Still, there was clear room for improvement in some areas, namely more money could have been obtained from the CEO for the project management work package (for a better access to resources needed to accomplish the project objectives). Another example is Venus Williams, 20, is the highest-paid woman athlete in the world. This may seem as a step forward for womankind but others view it as a business deal for more money than one will ever need. The disparity between hard working citizens and sporting legends leads us to question their contribution to society. Many ‘heroes’ are created and mostly because of sporting prowess. Yet, there are some things that are more significant that Olympic glory, contract negotiations and the score of the game. Professions that benefit mankind do not receive nearly as much attention or money but remain essential to society. Through a different perspective, it is becomes obvious that doctors and teachers are in fact underpaid. People who can hit or kick a ball are idolised while others who save lives struggle to gain recognition. What values are we teaching? Or more importantly, not teaching? Sports stars exhibit their talent through winning and rank. However, through success many values are taught. Values such as personal responsibility, integrity and respect for one’s self and others are replaced with greed, selfishness and ‘I win-you lose’ mentality. It is sad to think that sport and brilliant sport stars will become emblems of greed and selfishness.

It was with him that Alexander arranged a marriage for Lucrezia, to reward the Sforza family for their support and to bind their families together. Lucrezia was 13 years old when she married Giovanni Sforza on June 12, 1493. The marriage was not a happy one. Within four years, Lucrezia was complaining of his behavior. Giovanni also accused Lucrezia of misconduct. The Sforza family was no longer in favor with the pope; Ludovico had provoked an attack by the French that almost cost Alexander his papacy. Lucrezias father and her brother Cesare began to have other plans for Lucrezia: Alexander wanted to switch alliances from France to Naples. Early in 1497, Lucrezia and Giovanni separated. The Borgias began the process of annulling the marriage, charging Giovanni with impotence and nonconsummation of the marriage. Eventually, Giovanni agreed to the annulment in exchange for keeping the substantial dowry Lucrezia had brought to the marriage. Second Marriage Lucrezia, age 21, married Alfonso dAragon by proxy on June 28, 1498, and in person on July 21. A feast much like that at her first marriage celebrated this second wedding. The second marriage soured more quickly than the first. Only a year later, other alliances were tempting the Borgias. Alfonso left Rome, but Lucrezia talked him into returning. On July 15 of the next year, Alfonso survived an assassination attempt. He had been at the Vatican and was on his way home when hired killers stabbed him repeatedly. He managed to make it home, where Lucrezia cared for him and hired armed guards to protect him. About a month later on August 18, Cesare Borgia visited Alfonso, who was recuperating, promising to complete that which had not been finished earlier. Cesare returned later with another man, cleared the room, and, as the other man later recounted the story, had his associate strangle or smother Alfonso to death. Lucrezia was devastated by the death of her husband. After returning to Rome, Lucrezia began to work in the Vatican at her fathers side. Third Marriage A still-young daughter of the pope remained a prime candidate for an arranged marriage to solidify Borgia power. The eldest son, and presumed heir, of the Duke of Ferrara was a recent widower. The Borgias saw this as an opportunity for an alliance with a region that was physically between their current power base and another they wanted to add to the familys lands. Ercole dEste, the Duke of Ferrara, was understandably hesitant to marry his son, Alfonso dEste, to a woman whose first two marriages had ended in scandal and death, or to marry their more established family to the newly powerful Borgias. Ercole dEste was allied with the king of France, who wanted the alliance with the Pope. The Pope threatened Ercole with the loss of his lands and title if he did not consent. Ercole drove a hard bargain before consenting to the marriage in exchange for a very large dowry, a position in the church for his son, some additional lands, and reduced payments to the church. Ercole even considered marrying Lucrezia himself if his son Alfonso did not agree to the marriage- but Alfonso did. Lucrezia Borgia and Alfonso dEste were married by proxy at the Vatican on December 30, 1501. In January, she traveled with 1,000 in attendance to Ferrara, and on February 2, the two were married in person in another luxurious ceremony. Death of the Pope The summer of 1503 was oppressively hot and mosquitos were rampant. Lucrezias father died unexpectedly of malaria on August 18, 1503, ending the Borgia plans for solidifying power. Cesare was also infected but survived, but he was too ill at his fathers death to move quickly to secure treasure for his family. Cesare was supported by Pius III, the next pope, but that pope died after 26 days in office. Giuliano Della Rovere, who had been a rival of Alexander and long an enemy of the Borgias, tricked Cesare into supporting his election as pope, but as Julius II, he reneged on his promises to Cesare. The Vatican apartments of the Borgia family were sealed by Julius, who was revolted by the scandalous behavior of his predecessor. Children The main responsibility of a Renaissance rulers wife was to bear children, who would in turn either rule or be married into other families to cement alliances. Lucrezia was pregnant at least 11 times during her marriage to Alfonso. There were several miscarriages and at least one stillborn child, and two others died in infancy. Five other children survived infancy, and two- Ercole and Ippolito- lived to adulthood. Patronage and Business In Ferrara, Lucrezia associated with artists and writers, including the poet Ariosto, and helped bring many to the court, distant as it was from the Vatican. Poet Pietro Bembo was one of those she patronized and, judging from the letters surviving to him, its possible the two had an affair. Recent studies have shown that during her years in Ferrara, Lucrezia was also a shrewd businesswoman, building up her own fortune quite successfully. She used some of her wealth to build hospitals and convents, winning the respect of her subjects. She invested in marshy land, then drained it and recovered it for agricultural use. Later Years Lucrezia received word in 1512 that her son Rodrigo dAragon had died. She withdrew from most social life, though she continued her business enterprises. She eventually turned to religion, spending more time at convents, and even began wearing a hairshirt (an act of penance) under her fancy gowns. Visitors to Ferrara commented on her melancholy and noted that she seemed to be aging rapidly. She had four more pregnancies and perhaps two miscarriages between 1514 and 1519. In 1518, she wrote a letter to her son Alfonso in France. Death On June 14, 1519, Lucrezia gave birth to a stillborn daughter. Lucrezia contracted a fever and died 10 days later. How to Set Academic Goals In all walks of life, goals are set to keep us focused. From sports to sales and marketing, goal setting is common. By setting goals, an individual can be more aware of what will be needed to move forward. For example, by setting a goal to have our homework finished by Sunday evening, a student will have thought through the process and in so doing made allowances for other things he or she would typically do on a Sunday. But the bottom line on this is: goal setting helps us to focus on the end result.   We sometimes refer to goal setting as plotting a map for success. After all, you are likely to wander a bit off track if you dont keep your eye on a clear goal. Goals are like promises we make to our future selves.  It is never a bad time to get started when it comes to  setting goals, so you should never let a few setbacks get you down if you feel like youve been off track. So how can you be most successful? Setting Goals Like a P-R-O There are three key words to keep in mind when you set your goals: PositiveRealisticObjectives Be Positive: There are many books written about the power of positive thinking. Many people believe positive thinking is an essential factor when it comes to success, but it doesnt have anything to do with mystical powers or magic. Positive thoughts merely keep you on track and prevent you from holding yourself back in a negative funk. When you set goals, concentrate on positive thoughts. Dont use words like I wont fail algebra. That will only keep the notion of failure in your thoughts. Instead, use positive language: I will pass algebra with a B average.I will be accepted into three superior colleges.I will increase my SAT total scores by 100 points. Be Realistic: Dont set yourself up for disappointment by setting goals that you cant realistically achieve. Failure can have a snowball effect. If you set a goal thats not attainable and miss the mark, you are likely to lose confidence in other areas. For instance, if you fail a midterm in algebra and you resolve to improve your performance, dont set a goal of a final A grade overall if it isnt mathematically possible. Set Objectives: Objectives are the tools you will use to reach your goals; they are sort of like the little sisters to your goals. Objectives are the steps you take to ensure you stay on track. For example: Goal: Passing algebra with a B averageObjective 1: I will review the pre-algebra lessons I learned last year.Objective 2: I will see a tutor every Wednesday night.Objective 3: I will mark every future test in my planner. What these people do not realize are the far more horrible alternatives than the destruction of just two cities: an invasion of mainland Japan where millions of more deaths would have occurred, Soviet aid resulting in the division of Japan into a communist nation and the destruction of their culture, the deaths of thousands of Allied prisoners of war held in Japan, and the threat of renewed hostilities from Japan not to mention the possibility of several more years of bloody conflict. Throughout the course of this paper all of these examples will be discussed, as well as why Truman's decision was the most humane and rational for all the n ations involved, including Japan. Preceding the bombing of Hiroshima the Americans had pledged that if the Japanese did not agree to an unconditional surrender and an immediate conclusion to all hostilities that they would bomb Japan with atomic weapons. The Japanese called the Americans on a bluff or simply dismissed the American's words as tough talk and nothing more, unfortunately for the Japanese, the Americans did have the weapons they claimed they did, and weren't afraid to use them. Hiroshima was destroyed, though a catastrophe for the Japanese, it still did not mean their surrender. The Japanese, urged by their military establishment to continue the pursuit of victory still did not respond to the American threat. It took the Japanese another lost city in Nagasaki three days later to commence peace negotiations. It was too late for over 100,000 people by the time the treaty was signed aboard the American Battleship U.S. Missouri on September.2nd 1945. Japan had in essence, been defeated months before the bomb was dropped, the problem no longer existed to defeat Japan, but to secure her surrender- a far more difficult task. Quite simply, the Japanese did not believe in surrender. Their nation had never lost a war. Strength as a Teacher Essay I have come to believe -after receiving some of my students ´ feedback- that as a non-native speaker I did fairly well in teaching my lessons in the first two weeks. The students compared me to other non-native teacher they had been taught by before (in other Celta courses) and confirmed that I provided the most easily understandable explanations in the field of  ´lexis ´. Even though sometimes it did not work out as planned, I know that one of my major strength lies in explaining things in an extremely simple way. I enjoy teaching vocabulary by creating little stories. Not only but also do I derive from my tutors ´ feedback that a further strength of mine can be spotted in lesson planning. Although I need to express my aims more succinctly and clearly the lesson plans are sound, clear and thorough. To plan a lesson is not always easy, because it can never be foreseen what will happen during the class. So it is important to make sure not to be caught in the act with a lack of knowledge or information to present the students or at least not to let the students realize. Therefore, to think about more than one plan to fall back on is of major importance. Despite of the fact that I struggle with nervousness and tentativeness, I handle to lead a class. I give them time to think before they express themselves. I do not rush thing. I intend to spot my own mistakes immediately and correct them for the students, trying to not let them be aware of it. I do my best to fit in the time limit when to start and when to finish, trying to include all the points from my lesson plan. 2.) My major weakness is grammar. I am confident in using the basics of English grammar but when it gets into anything intricate Im a little lost as to how to explain it in a way that students can understand. Another fact that I have to focus on is to firstly learn from the students what they already know instead of teaching them something that they have already heard of from scratch. Here, providing exercises to check their knowledge and giving them further practice would be the best possible way. For example, I taught a grammar class in the second week of the course that was a bit of a dud because I just didnt really have the background knowledge required to present some easy understandable explanations. Moreover, the students had already heard of that grammatical structure I intended to teach them. I could have just checked and applied my teaching to their needs. I make every effort to give students sufficient feedback, but unfortunately this is another weakness that I am facing. Due to unexpected events in class, sometimes activities take longer and therefore need to be planned more thoroughly beforehand. Therefore there is not enough time to support students with enough feedback. One student once told me that she had not understood the purpose of the last activity in class because she wasn ´t given any feedback at the end. Though my lesson plans are well structured I need to follow this structure meticulously and make sure not to be distracted by anything that would lead to its collapse. Due to the shortness of my practical experience I am definitely struggling with being holistic but still concentrating too much on doing the single parts of a lesson perfect. 3.) Observing my colleagues, experienced teachers and videotaped teachers has certainly helped me to develop my teaching so far. Not only have I skilled and talented colleagues for demonstration, but especially observing one teacher in the last week helped me realize the most important thing for me while teaching: to keep calm and relaxed! This teacher had not only style but also a philosophy because she seemed to be very reflective about what she expressed. Moreover, she kept the  ´Teacher-Talk ´ at a minimum and asked her students generated, topic-related and intriguing questions exploiting the topic fully. She gave the students enough time to answer; not rushing them or giving them a feeling of insecurity. Teacher-type: the enabler. Students have a tendency immediately detecting an insecure or tentative teacher. It reflects in their class behavior and in their responses. I have come to realize that contrary to using my voice efficiently I am likely to speak in a low, soft sometimes even faint manner. True, not every teacher I observed spoke at full volume – and it is always important to note that the amount of students in a classroom is decisive but I have learnt that a certain system of when and how to use one ´s voice helps to effectively reach the aim of teaching successfully.

Reflection On Principles Of Moving And Handling Patients Nursing Essay Manual handling of patients has been a continuous issue of safety among nurses. In fact, the Department of Health(2007) has called for an end in the manual handling of patients due to the injury that it has caused among nurses. The no lifting policy has been imposed as a strict rule in all hospitals and the principles of body mechanics has been stressed among all hospital employees to prevent back pain muscle strain among healthcare staff. In the surgical ward where I am presently working, utilising the ideal way of moving handling patients is an important part of my everyday work especially that we deal mostly with orthopaedic patients. The proper use of manual handling aids and proper body mechanics are very important principles that we keep in mind everyday to ensure safety not only for our patients but for ourselves as well. Schà ¶n, D.  (1983) defined  reflective practice  as the capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continuous learning. This reflective essay will focus on my experiences while I worked to attain my goal of becoming more proficient in moving and handling surgical patients. Using the Gibbs (1988) Reflective Model, I would be reflecting on my practice to promote more avenues of learning about this topic in the future. The Reflective Cycle DESCRIPTION I have not had much experience with taking care of orthopaedic patients before I came to this country. But, when I started my adaptation program in a surgical ward of a private hospital, I was bombarded with patients who had hip, knee and foot surgeries. I came across manual handling aids like crutches, frames, and sticks in helping patients mobility and focused on promoting patients independence. During the first few weeks, I was not very confident with handling these patients knowing that I was not well equipped with the knowledge skills. Thus, I was motivated to find a way to be better in this aspect. I started by researching about postoperative care for orthopaedic patients and proper usage of manual handling/ mechanical aids equipment. I attended the mandatory training about manual handling as well and improved my knowledge about the principles of body mechanics and the different manual handling aids. We were also taught on how to move handle patients especially in difficult or emergency situations. In the next few weeks, I worked hand in hand with the physiotherapists and I carefully observed how they facilitate mobility and independence among postoperative patients. As cited in the NICE guidelines (draft for consultation, October 2010), the rapid restoration of physical and self care functions is critical to recovery from surgery, particularly where the goal is to return to the patient to pre-operative levels of function and residence. Therefore, it is very important to assist patients in returning to their optimal level of well being by motivating them to be independent as soon as possible as safety allows. FEELINGS During the first few weeks of my exposure, I looked at orthopaedic patients as very delicate in terms of mobilisation. I was aware of the restrictions that each type of surgery has, I knew what aids they need to facilitate their movement and I knew by theory the techniques that nurses physiotherapists apply when assisting them with their mobility. I was competent in knowledge due to the extra time I did with research and with my effort at working with the physiotherapists. Yet, I was not confident with the actual thing. Every time I assist these patients in getting out of bed, sitting on a chair, or going to the toilet, I ensured that I had some other health care professional with me to assist the patient. I had fears within me especially when handling hip patients knowing that these patients commonly experience fainting episodes during the first few days after the operation. I was very careful and very keen with my patients safety and every time I do something, I make sure that I f ollow the principles of body mechanics to protect myself as well. As time went on and as busier the ward gets, I developed more confidence in handling these patients and in giving instructions to aid in their mobility regaining their independence. As time went on, I experienced more incidents which gave me more learning. I experienced a few incidences wherein these hip patients lose their consciousness not only when the patient was about to lie back on bed but also when the patient just had a shower in the assisted bathroom. Those experiences made me very cautious from then on and they enhanced my skills in carrying out immediate interventions during emergency situations. EVALUATION The whole experience taught me to be confident and I was able to achieve a sense of control over every situation I encountered. I always regard safety as priority in doing every action. While assisting patients in regaining independence, there were times wherein I cared for patients who were very stubborn and who wanted to do things their own way. There were instances wherein the patients become overconfident that they do things on their own, not thinking about the risks that they put themselves into. No matter what instructions we give to these patients, they still hesitate to cooperate. In contrast, I also have this tendency of making my patients very dependent at times. As influenced by my culture, I sometimes tend to offer myself to my patients too much that they get used to having other people do things for them, thus conflicting the principle of promoting independence. ANALYSIS Examining deeply the experiences I had made me grasp the reality that we should always act accordingly and think about whats best for our patients. These decisions might not always please them but we, as nurses, have to show to them that we are in control of the situation and act as patient advocates. These incidences taught me to be firm and be authoritative as the situation allows and that I should assist the patients in attaining their goal of being able to do their activities of daily living (ADLs) on their own. CONCLUSION As the age, weight, and infirmity of patients being hospitalized increase in our society, the people responsible for caring for them face greater risk for developing musculoskeletal injury during the routine moving, transferring, and repositioning of those charged to their care. This risk is intensified by the growing median age of nurses (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010) and the fact that many of those caregivers suffer daily from previous injuries related to the physical tasks of patient care (Peter D. Hart Research Associates, Inc., March, 2006). There is increasing evidence (Nelson Baptiste, 2004;  Nelson, Motacki, Menzel, 2009) to indicate that safe patient-handling and movement strategies are effective in reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and pain. This entire experience made me realise the importance of safety while helping the patient achieve optimum health and faster recovery. If I were to make changes about the whole situation to improve myself, I could have worked with the physiotherapists by practically getting involved in using the different manual handling aids. Aside from that, I could have exposed myself to the use of other manual handling aids that were not commonly used in the ward where I am working. ACTION PLAN In the future, I intend to make myself more familiar with other mechanical devices by exposing myself to the medical wards. I would also plan to attend any trainings and seminars about manual handling to update me with the knowledge and skills. The Korean War would be a radical step in fighting wars, as well as the feelings people had toward the war. All wars in American History fought before the Korean War were based on either national survival or the gain of territory. A strong conflict was created between the Soviet Union and the United States. From this conflict, tension was so strong that wars were fougt in the midst of this Cold War. The Korean War was the first America ever waged that was not fought for national survival, for territory, for manifest destiny or for hegemony. Korea was the first ideological war;" (Coppel, 505). For example the American revolution was based on national survival. The people of the thirteen colonies wanted a nation in which they were free of Britain's tyranny. They wanted to live as an independent nation and survive as one. The American Civil War was another example of national survival. President Lincoln had the point that if the war was unsuccessful or was pushed in the right direction then the nation would be divided into the north and south. World War One was fought as a result of both the gain of territory and national survival. Austria-Hungary was expandingt into western parts of Russia and northern Italy. It was also conquering the nations to the east and taking control of their governments. The Allied powers sought to stop this expansion and war broke out in Europe. The United States then sent of troops to assist France and Great Britain in the conflict. At the end of World War One, Austria-Hungary was divided up, its territory formed many new nations as well as r estored land to already existing nations. In World War Two, much of the same circumstances were present with events that contributed to the escalation of the war, and the involvement of the United States. Germany, under the rule of Hitler was expanding very slowly across Europe. It took land to the east and west of them, took over many of the new nations created by the Versailles treaty, as well as disregarding many laws passed during the Versailles treaty. As the war continued, France was taken over, and Stalin gave Germany a large area of land that belonged to Russia when the country withdrew from the war. Vietnam War vs. Great Society Anonymous: "[Johnson] had miscalculated: Even the richest and most powerful nation in the world could not do it all" (qtd. in Turbulent Years: The 60s 36). Lyndon Baines Johnson is a president torn to pieces by war. He glows in the passage of bills benefiting American society. He is someone who has suffered through an entire generation of rebellious teens. What impact did LBJ's foreign policies concerning Vietnam War have on American society? The Vietnam War really isn't a war. Congress never declared war and thus, it is constitutionally considered police action. The United States can have troops in an area for ninety days, but how ninety days became twelve long, bloody years is beyond my knowledge. The war actually started in 1959, but U.S. involvement did not start until 1961. We withdrew from Vietnam in 1973, and it raged on for another two years. This was Vietnam's civil war, where 58,000 Americans lost their lives and Vietnam was lost to the Communists. If it hadn't been for the French-Indochina War, America might not have been so deeply involved in Vietnam. The area of Indochina, present-day Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, was taken away from France during the Second World War and afterwards, they tried to get it back. France lured the U.S. into paying 80% of the costs used to fight Ho Chi Minh and Communist North Vietnam by the end of the French-Indochina War. As author Gini Holland put it, "This [paying the costs] committed the United States financially, although not yet militarily, to the region" (qtd. in Holland 41). So, when Vietnam was into their civil war, the U.S. felt the need to help South Vietnam. In addition to fighting Communism, the American soldiers faced the very devoted and very martial Vietcong, the pro-Communist guerilla force of South Vietnam. Look what a little help to a friend can do to you. "It was in Southeast Asia that [Johnson] ran into his greatest difficulties" (qtd. in Encarta "Johnson, Lyndon Baines"). He finished John F. Kennedy's term starting in 1963 and completed another term, ending his presidency in 1969. As many of us are, he was reluctant to get fully involved in the war. After ordering air strikes against North Vietnam in retaliation for U.S. ships being attacked by torpedoes, he stated, "We will seek no wider war" (qtd. in Hargrove 69). Caliban as a Sympathetic Character Essay

In the play â€Å"The Tempest†, Shakespeare introduces us to several different characters, each identified individually with their contrasting attitudes, nature and prior circumstances that have brought them to a deserted isle in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. Shakespeare creates characters that exemplify the relationship between human nature and contemporary civilization and the distinction between men and monsters. The character of Caliban is known to its complexity and numerous aspects, depths and sides to it. Caliban, the only native of the island is a vulgar, malice slave that is often referred to a beast. He is the son of the witch Sycorax and his Father is unknown, hence associated with the devil and he was said to be â€Å"littered† on the island, a word generally used to describe the birth of animals. Shakespeare describes Caliban as a pure product of nature, of whom he is uncontrolled, wild, savage, innocent and uncorrupted by the influence of civilization. He is uneducated, untrained and uncivilized, a creature of the earth, being almost literally dug out of the ground. Caliban used to own the island, however, was naà ¯ve enough to allow a foreigner (Prospero) to enter his most valued occupation and abduct it from him. Caliban and Prospero appear to have had an affectionate relationship, through Prospero educating him and offering him a shelter in his own cave, an intimate favor demonstrating compassion and abundant generosity as well as Caliban showing him all the parts of the island. Caliban takes Prospero’s affection for granted and underestimates Prospero’s power and magic, accordingly acts in an aggressive manner in an attempt to rape Miranda. This causes the reader to be repulsed by his disgusting behavior, almost sensing animosity that Caliban does not display the minimal appreciation of Prospero’s considerable kindness. At this point, the reader can easily understand why Prospero treats him so poorly, and almost feel as if he deserves to be treated in such way, that he was not accounted and aware of the consequences that accompany such action and therefore had brought his situation upon himself. Consequently, the question remains, if Caliban had controlled his impulses, and held back his barbarous instincts, would he  really had found himself in a better- off situation, or is being mistreated a part of his nature and fate?
